WHAT IS FILIAL THERAPY

Filial / Family Therapy is a didactic and dynamic training method that involves parent in the therapy of their children by teaching and supervising them in the basic methodology of child-centered play therapy.

Participants will learn how to structure and conduct training within a ten week format – including content and organisation of weekly sessions and logistics of supervision / feedback of parent- conducted sessions.

Through video tapes of parents conducting play sessions, participants will learn how to supervise parents within the context of the group format.

Filial Therapy has been shown, through research and clinical experience, to be an effective intervention for children and families experiencing a variety of social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. This unique therapy involves parents as the primary change agents to resolve child-related problems and to encourage children’s healthy psychological development.

Filial Therapists train and supervise parents, as the parents conduct child-centered play sessions, which not only helps eliminate presenting problems, but strengthens parent, child and family relationships. Participants will learn how to tutor parents through live demonstrations. This course is only available to those persons who have completed a 2 Day Workshop in client-centered Play Therapy.

DEVELOPMENTAL TOUCH THERAPY

Adults learn to do Developmental Play through exercises that enable them to experience themselves seen and touched, exercises that help them see and touch others. Developmental Play has proven effective with children who have relationship problems at the attachment level: Psychotic, Attention Deficit Hyperactive (ADHD), sexually and physically abused, and destructively acting out children.

TRAUMA-FOCUSSED INTEGRATED PLAY THERAPY (TF-IPT)

WHAT IS IT

PRIMARY GOALS OF TREATMENT

This curriculum introduces a structured, integrated treatment model (TF-IPT) which encompasses the basic principles of evidence based practices such as Trauma-Focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as well as three-phase trauma treatment model originally proposed by Dr.Judith Herman (1997).

The model advances trauma-focussed goals by utilizing an array of approaches which provide children with broad opportunities to engage and invest in the treatment process.

Expressive therapies including play and art therapies are woven into the curriculum to enhance the potential to both educate and provide opportunities for reparative work. This integrated model, presented with specific treatment phases, has been found to be effective, engaging and user-friendly.

Trauma-focussed treatment refers to a specific clinical focus which prioritizes the direct management of traumatic experience.

Based on the current understanding of trauma and its long-term effects, trauma focussed treatment values the need to break the cycle of denial and secrecy, corrective cognitive distortions through pshchoeducation, encourage the expression of affect, and bring traumatic menories into conscious awareness to decrease post-trauma symptoms, encourage improved social interactions, and prevent the need for unhealthy coping strategies.

The specific goals of trauma-focussed integrayed play therapy are :

  • To create an environment of safety, trust and comfort.
  • To process traumatic material
  • To encourage social re-connections
  • To return to pre-trauma development functioning

This practical workshop will be aimed at helping the therapist or counsellor engage the reluctant adolescent in a working alliance without being pedantic or condescending.

Handling child's anger can be one of the most distressing, confusing· and draining experiences to parents and teachers alike.

Parents and teachers frequently turn to the counsellor or other mental health professional for help in coping with and understanding angry children, but such professional are rarely trained in specific techniques to help these difficult  children  and  the  people  who care  for them.

From a developmental point of view, ineffective responses to a child’s anger can lead to a poor self-image, a lack of social experiences, and the missing of many important childhood milestones. From a behavioural point of view, angry children are more likely to engage in anti-social and  delinquent activities and aggressive acts.

Another disturbing aspect of a child’s uncontrolled anger is the   angry feelings may be stirred up in adults There is high correlation between angry children and abuse and violence in the home, suggesting that any treatment must take both intrapsychic and systemic factors into consideration. This  workshop will not only help mental health professionals use techniques and interventions more effectively. but will also re-energise them in their work with these difficult children.

What You Will Learn :

How to differentiate the causes of a child’s anger How to choose techniques according to the specific diagnostic categories, including conduct disorders, ADHD, Oppositional / Defiance disorders.

  • How to treat children “ without  a  conscience “

  • treatment
  • How to consult with teachers for maximum therapeutic effect
  • How to run an “ anger management “ group
  • How to integrate play therapy, behavioural, cognitive and systems interventions
  • Identifying and using community resources
  • Activity and sports techniques
  • Ways to repair missed developmental tasks
  • Using interpretations successfully
  • 3 stages of play therapy with angry children
  • Family techniques that really work
  • Homework assignments for parents

THE DISCOVERY GAME

The Discovery Game is specifically designed to help children who are resistant to involvement in play therapy and are unable to verbalize their emotions.

The Discovery game will minimize the therapeutic process by providing the therapist with information on what the child is thinking, thus giving insight into how the child is feeling and subsequently how the child is acting out his feelings.

The game helps children to free themselves sufficiently to reveal previously suppressed thoughts, feeling and behaviours.

The game has been developed to help the therapist understand the child's thought process. If the therapist understands the thought process the therapist can help the child change prevailing misconceptions.

The game helps children to free themselves sufficiently to reveal previously suppressed thoughts, feeling and behaviours.

DEVELOPMENTAL
